Cyberknife wins the Arkansas Derby, earns a classic bid for Cox

Cyberknife stalked the pace under Florent Geroux, took over on the second turn and then fended off all comers in the stretch to win the Grade 1, $1.25 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.

Cyberknife stopped the clock in 1:50.42 for 1 1/8 miles on a fast track to earn 100 points and a berth in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Brad Cox. Barber Road surged late to slip past the filly Secret Oath for second and earn 40 points for trainer John Ortiz.

Secret Oath, who was dispatched as the 7-5 favorite in the nine-horse field, made a bold move on the second turn to draw into contention but could not catch the winner before being overtaken for second. Doppelganger checked in fourth.

Cyberknife paid $13.60 as the 5-1 third choice in the wagering. Earlier on the card, Geroux also won the Fantasy (G3) with Yuugiri to earn a Kentucky Oaks berth and the Oaklawn Mile with Fulsome.

Cyberknife was sixth in the Lecomte (G3) in January in his sophomore ow before dropping into an allowance at Fair Grounds and scoring in his most recent start on Feb. 19. The son of Gun Runner, who was a $400,000 auction purchase as a yearling, improved to 6: 3-2-0 for owner Gold Square LLC.
